Descripttion

A tuft of "cox comb" on the trailing edge of the fore wing gives this common woodland moth its name Variable in shades of brown, with faint black lines this species is usually a rich chestnut colour with tuft of creamy hairs on the thorax.. Has evolved with British native trees Birch, Hazel etc and resembles a dead leaf.

Well camouflaged if handled, feigns death.

Green caterpillars varies from Yellow to dark green feed on a wide range of deciduous trees, raises the head over the back when alarmed to break up its outline
