Labiatae (Deadnettle family)

Data Table

Grows up to one foot high. Short /medium downy perennial.Unlike other members of the Deadnettle family, the flowers have no upper lip and the stamens are prominent. The greenish, yellow flowers are borne on whorled spikes. The leaves are wrinkled and heart-shaped.

Most species of the genus Teucrium are native to the Mediterranean and the Orient. Wood Sage grows in the lowland Birch and oak forests of Western and North-West Europe, although it can be cultivated almost anywhere, as this is not a fussy plant. In shady conditions it tends to grow more leaves than in lighter areas to enhance photosythesis. In Britain it is common in woods, grassland, heaths and dunes. It seems to like dry, rather acid soils.

Wood Sage was once a well-respected medicinal plant, but is now rarely used. It has Astringent, Diaphoretic, Anti-rheumatic, Carminative, Vulnerary and Anti-microbial properties. The flowering herb was used in feverish colds (with others like Elder and Yarrow), Upper respiratory infections, rheumatic conditions and flatulent dyspepsia. Externally it was used for indolent ulcers and as a poultice for abcesses and carbuncles together with Chickweed.
