Tufted perennial of scrub and woods, mostly on calcareous soils. Locally common only in S England and S Wales. Sword-shaped leaves are dark green and have an unpleasant smell. Purplish flowers, 70 to 80 mm across, May to July. Seeds bright orange. Height up to 60cm
