Usually prostrate perennial of dry grassland, mainly on calcareous soil. Locally common only in S England. The 4-angled stems carry narrow leaves in whorls of four. Dense clusters of pink, 4 petalled flowers, 3 to 4mm across, appear June to September. Height up to 15cm
