Description

Flower diameter c 8-15 mm

Flowers solitary in leaf-axils, on stalks much more than twice as long as leaves (typically four times as long as the leaf in whose axil they are). Beware V persica which also occurs in mown grass and has very similar flowers (though without the violet tinge) but has flower stalks at most twice leaf length.

Other features: Flowers mauvish-blue, the top petal usually darker than the bottom one. Flower-stalks notably slender. Does not normally produce fruits in Britain. Grows along the ground, forming mats.

Appears now and again in regularly-mown grass.
