.An upright perennial. Favours a wide range of grassy habitats, from meadows and woodland rides to coastal cliffs and dunes. Leaves are dark green and shaped like an arrowheads ; the lower ones are stalked while the upper ones are stalkless and clasp the stem. Leaves taste of vinegar. Flowers are reddish and borne in upright slender spikes. Occasionally the whole plant may be tinged red .Up to 60 cm tall
