Hairy annual weed of arable land and disturbed ground. Widespread but commonest in S and E England; scarce in N and W. Leaves are much-branched. Flowers 70 to 100 mm across with four papery, scarlet petals; appear June to August. Ovoid seed capsule. Height up to 60cm
