Up to 80 cm tall. An upright and downy perennial. Basal leaves are oval, sometimes pinnately lobed and with jagged-toothed margins: they form a rosette. Stem leaves are smaller and, together with the bracts, they are purplish. Flowers are 6-10 mm long and variable in colour, but usually blue or violet.Dry grassy habitats, often coastal, invariably on lime-rich soils.April-September
