Length 6 to 12 mm

Description Metallic green tachinid , with brassy / green abdomen the chest or thorax is covered by bristly stiff hairs

Phenology April to early June. mainly a Springtime species

Diet Adults flies feed on nectar and pollen , larva feed on caterpillars

Habitat Woodland margins and other densely wooded areas

Confusion Species

Chrysosomopsis auratus is similar toGymnocheta viridis . Differentiation can be made counting the rows of dorso-central bristles on the thorax behind the suture line.

G. viridis has 4 rows whilst

C. auratus has 3.

Dorso-central bristles midway to the wing bases, the central bristles are acrostichals
