Length . Male 12mm Female 14 mm - larger

Identification

Males have large bulbous eyes and a rather tubular segmented body and black legs. Females have smoky wings and a smaller head and eyes.
The front legs have a stout spine at the tip of the tibi
When in flight they fly in a slow clumbsy fashion with characteristic long legs dangling down.

Similar Species

B. marci is in general larger than other Bibio sp and has a black front edge to its wings.

Life Cycle


The larvae feed on grass roots, leaf mould and decaying matter.

Habitat

Woodland Margins , damp areass and hedgrows
